North Korea Claims to Be in Possession of Missile-Fitting Nuclear Weapons

North Korea claimed on Wednesday that it has enough technology to make nuclear warheads that are small enough to fit on missiles, and according to the Washington Post, this will mark a major advancement in the country's military capabilities if this claim proves to be true. Hence, North Korea will become a major threat in the world.

However, the news outlet noted that Pyongyang tends to exaggerate their technical abilities, pointing out the doubtful results of their tests of submarine-launched ballistic missiles this month.

The National Defense Commission, or NDC, North Korea's top military authority, said that it was able to make warheads small enough to fit on intercontinental ballistic missiles, and are designed to be directed at the United States. A spokesperson for the commission said via Yonhap News, "It is long since [North Korea's] nuclear striking means have entered the stage of producing smaller nukes and diversifying them."

Fox News also reported that the development of said weapon was part of Pyongyang's effort to boost their self-defense capability. The spokesperson said, "It is long since the DPRK's nuclear striking means have entered the stage of producing smaller nukes and diversifying them. The DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) has reached the stage of ensuring the highest precision and intelligence and best accuracy of not only medium- and short-range rockets, but long-range ones."

On Tuesday, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. James A. Winnefeld, Jr., said in a forum in Washington that the North Koreans "have not gotten as far as their clever video editors and spinmeisters would have us believe. They are years away from developing this capability."

An officer from AllSource Analysis, Joseph S. Bermudez Jr., who is an expert on North Korea's weapons program said that the test missile the country boasted to be deadly appears to have been fired from a submerged barge instead of a submarine. It was also noted that the country's television ran only photos, not videos of the tests, leading analysts to believe that the missile only flew for a few seconds. However, experts are still cautious about the possibility of North Korea producing the said weapons.

It has been acknowledged by both the United States and South Korea that North Korea carried out several tests but the kind remains unverified.

Winnefeld, however, said that if North Korea does manage to develop capable nuclear technology via a submarine, "it will present a hard-to-detect danger for Japan and South Korea as well as our servicemembers stationed in the region."

Do you think North Korea will post a serious threat to the world, or is this another exaggeration from the isolated nation?
