The Seattle Mariners struck a major deal on Friday after signing free agent slugger Robinson Cano to a 10-year, $240 million contract, a source close to situation reported.

Cano, who spent his first nine seasons with the New York Yankees, will be playing for a new team starting next season after inking a megadeal that will pay him more than 20 million per year.

"According to ESPN's Enrique Rojas, the Seattle Mariners and Cano have agreed to a 10-year contract worth $240 million. A physical is schedule for next Monday," Larry Brown sports reported on Friday morning.

Making the Deal Done For Cano

As early as Thursday, several sources indicated that the Mariners had ramped up negotiation with Cano's camp regarding a potential blockbuster deal. Based on initial reports, the Mariners were willing to sign Cano somewhere within the range of $230 to $240 million.

"Sources: Cano asked #Mariner for 240/10. M's made offer, but not over 200. Cano on plane to Seattle. Meeting with club officials later today," MLB insider Ken Rosenthal tweeted on Thursday.

The Mariners were reportedly close to signing Cano to a nine-year $225 million deal when Jay-Z drew the ire of Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln after Jay-Z increased his client's asking price to a 10-year, $250 million deal.

"Source said Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln "exploded" after Jay Z changed it up and ended the meeting with Cano and his camp," Mark Feinsand tweeted.

Baseball followers heavily criticized Cano's move to dump Scott Boras in favor of Jay-Z after his negotiations with the Mariners hit a major snag. Then the unexpected took place, as the Mariners eventually decided to honor's Cano's 10-year, $250 million deal on Friday morning.

"The internet buzzed all morning on Friday about how Cano was an idiot for getting rid of Scott Boras because Jay-Z is in way over his head. Next thing we knew, the Mariners caved and gave Cano almost every penny that he was seeking. If all the reports are true, Jay-Z couldn't have handled the negotiations any better," Larry Brown Sports reported.

Cano with the Mariners

Pending a physical on Monday, Cano is expected to assume the role of the star hitter for the Mariners team that already possesses Cy Young Award-winning ace pitcher Felix Hernandez.

Cano batted .309 with 204 homers, 822 RBIs and 1,649 hits throughout his career with the Yankees. In 2009, the five-time MLB All-Star won his lone World Series title. He won Silver Slugger awards five times and Gold Glove awards twice.
