It looks like HTC has beaten Samsung to the update punch once again. Owners of the Google Play edition of the HTC One will be pleased to know that Android 4.4 KitKat has officially started rolling out over the air for download.

The update weighs in at 305MB, so for those lucky enough to be able to download it, remember to charge your device and have it tethered to a Wi-Fi connection. As with all over-the-air pushes, not everybody will get it immediately — instead, the process is usually phased out in batches.

The update is KitKat version KRT16S, which is the latest one and comes with a few fixes to connectivity and encryption problems that plagued early Android 4.4 firmwares.

Those too impatient to wait, however, can go ahead and download the necessary files straight from here, thanks to an XDA Developer user. Once downloaded, the file will have to be manually loaded used ADB (if you don't know what that is, it's probably best to simply wait for the official download to reach you).

Android 4.4 KitKat for the HTC One Google Play edition comes with all the new goodies KitKat offers except for the Google Launcher that can be found on the Nexus 5. KitKat boasts a cleaner, more vibrant look, and the entire interface has had Google Now integrated into more functions than ever before.

HTC has confirmed that all normal carrier-tied versions of the HTC One will receive Android 4.4 KitKat by the end of January 2014.
