It has been a tough year for the Washington Redskins' Robert Griffin III and the San Francisco 49ers' Colin Kaepernick, two young quarterbacks who have had trouble fulfilling their high expectations and will face off on Monday Night Football this week.

Griffin led Washington (3-7) to the NFC East division title last year before injuring his knee during the playoffs, causing him to undergo major knee surgery during the off-season. Griffin returned, playing right away in Week 1 but has struggled since his return to action, completing only 59.7 percent of his passes to go with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while also having his leadership questioned after last week's performance.

Griffin attempted to rally Washington back from a 24-point deficit against the Philadelphia Eagles, in a crucial NFC East division game, going for 264 yards on 17-of-35 passing with two touchdowns before throwing a momentum-killing interception to Eagles CB Brandon Boykin, off his back-foot, in the end zone during the closing minutes of the game.

Griffin seemed to blame teammates in the press conference after game, which the quarterback said were misinterpreted by the media.

"I feel like for myself, moving forward, I have to be more wary of the hostility," said Griffin. "I was trying to give a compliment to Philadelphia's defense and it was taken as a shot against my coaches. It wasn't."

Kaepernick has also had a rough year as well, sporting an 81.8 quarterback rating while ranked 31st in the league with a 56.2 completion percentage and only 11 touchdowns. The 49ers (6-4) were a preseason favorite to return to the Super Bowl but have lost back-to-back crucial games the last two weeks, losing against the surging Carolina Panthers and the New Orleans Saints. Kaepernick threw for two touchdowns in San Fancisco's 23-20 loss to New Orleans last week but only threw for 127 yards as well as an interception in a key moment in the game, putting the 49ers three and half games behind the NFC West leading Seattle Seahawks.

Kaepernick realizes time is running out with his team trying to keep up with the Seahawks while trying to stay ahead of the surprising Arizona Cardinals - who beat the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday and are currently ahead of them in the NFC West division standings.

"I think we are (surprised) but we still have six more to go," said Kaepernick. "And we can still finish this season 12-4."
