Halloween Costumes 2014: Ray Rice Dress-up Gets a Response From Janay

By Nens Bolilan| Oct 29, 2014

Have you seen that costume that drags around a woman around, while clutching her legs, her face down on the floor? That's apparently a mockery of the issue that ended Ray Rice's run with the Baltimore Ravens.

The Rice controversy is among the reasons for the NFL's gloomy September, Fox Sports said, explaining that the sports world erupted with the twin domestic violence tales of Rice and Adrian Peterson. However, the Rice case lives again this Halloween, with one kid participating, even.

Janay is unhappy with the issue, saying on Twitter: "... [I]t's sad, that my suffering amuses others."

TMZ, in another report, wrote that the couple is dealing with the newest blow to their marriage through turning to religion and "praying for those people," basing on interviews with their friends and relatives.

The two have been active in their Born Again Church since the incident, it added. They chose not to abandon their marriage and instead, rebuild it after the controversy.

The responses to her reply to TMZ reflect how complicated the issue is.

AngryRanga said: "... [M]ost people didn't think your (Janay) suffering was funny but you keep defending him! what he did was disgusting." Jimms 5543 agreed, saying: "... [T]hank you Ranga. 100% agree. His actions AFTER he knocked her out were so disturbing. #RealMenDoNotHitWomen" Jason Jackson, on the ther hand, said: "... [I]n some cases you don't get an opinion. This is one of them. Stop."

Members of the media have taken Janay's side, with "The Bert Show" saying the costume is just not okay and news anchor David Nelson saying it is "disgusting." Fox Sports is troubled that the public outrage on the issue might have been replaced by "morbid humor." CNN, moreover, included it in its "Halloween costumes to avoid this year."

Keith Olbermann also aired his two cents on the issue in the Oct. 27 episode of his ESPN2 program. He said, "You never thought about her, did you geniuses? ... The fact that you're trying to get a like or a laugh by using domestic violence, which still happens in part because morons like you still laugh at it," per the Huffington Post.

He added: "That, you are okay with, and the black face part. But you never thought about dressing up and proudly posting your insults and how they could ever get back to the victim herself. Great."

WGN TV said the Ray Rice costume, which displayed the growing trend of dressing kids with "wildly inappropriate" Halloween costumes, was a concrete example of bad parenting.

It interviewed SF Dads Group organizer Mike Heenan, who said the costume was "utterly disgusting... Not just insensitive. Idiotic! Dangerous! Disgraceful!" because it sent the message of"the seemingly celebratory suggestion of domestic violence in dragging around a Janay Rice doll."

Rice made the headlines when TMZ released footage of him knocking down wife Janay inside an elevator, the Huffington Post recounted. Rice and Peterson have been suspended indefinitely for the cases they are embroiled in.
