Canelo Alvarez Next Fight on HBO vs Joshua Clottey [Rumors]

Boxer Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has moved on from his partnership with Showtime and returned to HBO with a multi-fight deal on Tuesday. The first fight, with an unnamed contender, is slated or Dec. 6 in San Antonio.

While the news has yet to be confirmed, Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix is reporting that the 37-year-old will be facing off against veteran boxer, African Joshua Clottey.

"Golden Boy will announce tomorrow Canelo Alvarez vs. Josh Clottey in December on HBO, per sources. Golden Boy-HBO reconciliation continues," wrote Mannix on Twitter.

Other contenders for the fight include James Kirkland and Demetrius Andrade. Other matches are also reportedly in negotiations for the pair including Kirkland facing Gabriel Rosado in November and Andrade facing Matt Korobov for a WBO middleweight title, noted Sports World News.

Golden Boy head Oscar De La Hoya has mentioned he is looking to make a Canelo-Miguel Cotto fight happen in 2015. Boxing News noted that "Considering Alvarez is now back on HBO, and the impending Bernard Hopkins-Sergey Kovalev showdown is also on the network, it would not be a surprise to see Canelo-Cotto land on HBO PPV next year."

"It is obviously the fight people want to see," quoted the site of De La Hoya on the match. "I'm looking forward to sitting down with Cotto and discussing the possibility of making that fight. Outside of [Floyd] Mayweather- [Manny] Pacquiao, it's the biggest fight in boxing."

Showtime Comments on The Departure

Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza shared the network's displeasure over the deceitful way the boxer departed.

"We accepted it," Espinoza said via the LA Times. "And [Alvarez promoter] Oscar [De La Hoya] said, 'Canelo's going to be here for several years and we'll fly him up for a celebratory dinner [in New York].'"

He revealed that the decision was not a surprise because discussions on a fight with Miguel Cotto has been discussed as early as two months ago.

"The announcement didn't come as any surprise to me because Oscar has talked since July about wanting to having 'Canelo' fight Miguel Cotto in May with HBO fighters on the undercard," Espinoza continued. "But the deceitful manner Oscar went about it ... [as if] there's no repercussions to this promise that was reneged on with a company you do business with."

Speaking on the move, Alvarez shared he was excited and confirmed his long-term commitment to HBO.

"For all of my career, I have wanted to fight on HBO for one main reason--I believe it will allow more of my fans to see me in action," said the athlete, per ESPN. "Today marks a huge milestone for me, and I look forward to a long and successful partnership with HBO."
