'How to Train Your Dragon 3' Release Date, Plot & Trailer: Film Delayed for a Year

"How to Train Your Dragon 2" was a box office hit, and many would surely expect a third film in the works. However, latest reports say that the newest installment will be put on delay.

The official press release about the third movie franchise, which "has grossed $174 million domestically and $426 million in international markets," states that the beloved characters, Hiccup and Toothless, will be seen on the big screen again on June 9, 2017, instead.

"From the same creative team as the first two films, writer/director Dean DeBlois and producer Bonnie Arnold, How to Train Your Dragon 3 continues the story where the sequel leaves off (sorry folks, no spoilers here). Returning cast includes Jay Baruchel as Hiccup, America Ferrera as Astrid and Cate Blanchett as Valka," the statement continued.

In a Screenrant report, it was noted that the original release date, June 17, 2016, coincides with the movies, "Finding Dory" and "The Nice Guys." The newly pegged date for "How to Train Your Dragon 3" will reportedly arrive two weeks after the "LEGO Movie" sequel.

With a third film in line for the hit 3D animated movie franchise, it is most likely that a fourth movie will also be done. The idea of it has been welcomed even before the sequel was released on the big screen.

Collider spoke with "How to Train Your Dragon 2" composer, John Powell, and he revealed:

"I saw Dean in Cannes, we had a premiere of the film there, and he was very merry and a bit drunk and he sort of knew about [How to Train Your Dragon] 3 and I think it was mentioned to him by Jeffrey that maybe they would do 4. And that was definitely, I think, a real kind of eye-opener for Dean and for me because it's like, 'Hey I thought this was a trilogy?' (laughs). So I don't know, and it might be good because he's got a lot of story left to tell, so maybe splitting it into two will work, but I just don't know about that yet. I'm supposing that at the moment, Dean has an idea for the third one and he isn't telling any of us yet."

It is still way too early to think of the possibility of a fourth installment and fans have nothing else to do but wait for the latest updates on the movie franchise.
