Rory McIlroy, who recently won the PGA Championship, admitted that his break up with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki made him play better golf.

It can be remembered that the two called off their engagement in May after distributing invitations for their wedding. Daily Mail revealed that the golfer realized that their split was "for the best in terms of [his] golf."

"I think what happened has been for the best in terms of my golf. I've put a bit more time into it and it has refocused me. I mean, what else do I have to do now? I go to the golf course, to the gym and it's just my life at the minute. I worked pretty hard before but the past couple of months I've really just buried myself in my game. 'I've practiced hard and I've done all the right things and I'm reaping the rewards," he told Daily Mail.

McIlroy also noted that he is now in a better place mentally. He earlier claimed that his breakup with his ex-fiancee was due to the fact that they were not prepared for "all that marriage entails."

It was reported by Daily Mail that the split was "mutual and amicable" for the two parties with McIlroy admitting that the problem was his.

"There is never a good time to end a relationship. I'm not going to lie, it's going to be really difficult but when I get inside the ropes I'm going to have to try and concentrate on the matter in hand. Obviously [it's] quite a difficult time for Caroline and myself. It was mutual and amicable and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us," he was quoted by Daily Mail as saying.

Days after that, the golfer bagged his BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth then went on to win the British Open then recently the 96th US PGA Championship.

"Golf is the number one priority to me and while I'm on this run of form I want to try and keep it going as long as possible. I'm going to keep working hard and try and get even better. Hopefully I can do that over the next few years and hopefully you'll see golf like this more often from me," he added.

It was earlier revealed that the golfer proposed to Wozniacki on New Year's Day with a £120,000 diamond ring. Daily Mail said that the two had an on and off relationship with McIlroy finally calling it quits last April.

Yahoo Sports, in a similar report, detailed how McIlroy was not ready for marriage saying "There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.  I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we have had."

Hearing her ex-fiancée claim that their split bore good results would "not be easy" for Wozniacki especially now that she is golf has become the main focus of her former partner, Yahoo noted.
