A Manhattan Beach long distance swimmer was bitten by a great white shark just south of the Manhattan Beach pier on Saturday, according to authorities.

Harbor beach officials cleared the water after the attack, which took place around 9:30 a.m. Lifeguards were then called in to use water vehicles to annoy the shark in hopes of driving it further out to sea.

According to Los Angeles County lifeguard spokesman Rick Flores, the victim, a young male adult, is in critical condition. County lifeguards later updated his condition, categorizing it as "stable."

Witnesses recall the victim as being bitten on the thigh and hand, and state that he was conscious while being transported to receive emergency care.

Flores confirmed that the shark was about 10 feet long, but would not confirm any other details.
