Floyd Mayweather Next Fight 2014: Miguel Cotto Will Beat 'Money' in Rematch Says Roach & Arum

By Nens Bolilan| Jun 10, 2014

After an impressive win over Argentine boxer Sergio Martinez on Sunday, promoter Bob Arum and coach Freddie Roach are confident that Miguel Cotto can end the reign of American boxer Floyd Mayweather.

Cotto dominated Martinez during their match, ending the fight during the ninth round with a TKO.

Cotto is one of Roach's best students, writes The Epoch Times. Roach, who also trains Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, added that Martinez was not careful during the match because he only made use of his speed to outclass Cotto.

Cotto vs Mayweather Part 2?

East Side Boxing noted that a rematch between Cotto and Mayweather would be very interesting, since Mayweather hasn't agreed to fight Pacquiao. Roach, however, is still doubtful that Mayweather will agree to fight Cotto again. The Puerto Rican boxer would love to take revenge and go home as a winner, the trainer revealed. Arum, on the other hand, believes that the American boxer "doesn't stand a chance" against Cotto because Cotto is training under Roach. Cotto, Boxing Scene explained, improved to 2-0 under Roach's coaching which was proven with his recent technical knockout win. The fighter previously trained with Pedro Diaz from Cuba.

"I'll hold it up to Floyd and say, 'Will you fight Cotto again?' Are you crazy? He's afraid to fight Manny. You think he'd fight Cotto?", writes the Boxing Scene.

Roach also told East Side Boxing that Mayweather at 37 is already "past his prime" and is a shot fighter. "His statements about how he stood and fought with Marcos Maidana are nonsense," Roach added.

Cotto and Mayweather fought in Las Vegas in May 2012 where Mayweather won via unanimous decision.

Boxing Scene claimed that a Mayweather-Cotto clash maybe more competitive than anyone would have ever expected. It also noted that during Mayweather's win against Cotto in Las Vegas, there was a large margins in the scorecards. Mayweather, according to the report, might consider adding a middleweight title to his numerous title belts, a reason to fight with Cotto again.

If a rematch will happen this year or next year, boxing fans will surely be looking forward to it.
