Milan Fashion Week 2014: Popular Gucci Kicks Things Off, Young Brands Will Make a Splash

By Yara Simón| Feb 18, 2014

Milan Fashion Week is the smallest of fashion month, but it will still manage to make a pretty big impact.

A lot of it because of Gucci, who will officially kick off Milan Fashion Week. The star favorite has also proven to be well loved by magazine editors. Gucci was worn on the most magazine covers for fall 2013, scoring 108 covers. It also came in at No. 1 for spring 2013 with 111 covers, said Fashion Times. Whatever is presented on the runway will probably be all over next year's issues.

Also, Dolce & Gabbana, who will show on Sunday, was featured on 102 covers, and will probably have an impressive representation on magazines and red carpets once again.

New designers are also set to make some waves as well. Armani will be hosting a Au Jour le Jour, a young brand. Their dinosaur'd website is just one clue about the brand's off-kilter nature. It loves to feature heavily printed items, and it's exactly the kind of thing adventurous wearers want to have. It just screams cool and more accessible than what is normally shown in Milan. The brand was launched in 2010.

Stella Jean, which is also a more accessible brand, has bright colors and clashing prints. It looks as though it could easily fit in at New York or London, and it has been "shortlisted for the inaugural LVMH prize for young fashion designers," said the Financial Times.

For a little less color, tune into newbie Andrea Incontri, who debuted his womenswear collection in 2012. His design aesthetic mixes minimalist and architectural shapes.

As for established brands: Go for Marni if you like stylish, quirky clothes that are not necessarily sexy, try Jil Sander for sleek and the ultimate in fashionable, and check out Armani for pieces that are dramatic and beautiful.
