There are days when the solution to one's problem is to pack one's bags and just get away from it all. While many people would go to Paris or to Hawaii to get away from it all, why not consider the "land of lakes and volcanoes" for one's next travel destination?

Nicaragua is an often overlooked travel destination, and unfairly so. Travel writers have often praised Nicaragua for its natural beauty and its numerous attractions, reports WCF Courier. There are many unusual attractions in Nicaragua that many thrill seekers should surely add to their bucket list. Where else can one actually "volcano board"?

Nicaragua offers a unique mixture of natural wonder, historical sites, parks and gardens that will surely awaken one's sense of wanderlust.

Here are some of Nicaragua's top five travel destinations:

1. Huellas de Acahualinca -- This was discovered by miners in 1874, and these fossilized tracks record the passage of men, women and children. This site offers a trip back in time, back to the days of our early ancestors. Forensics specialists have determined that these folks were fairly tall, measuring between 145cm and 160cm reports Lonely Planet. The place offers an on-site museum with human skulls, a fossilized bison track and a lot of ancient ceramics. This is a must for history buffs!

2. Parque de la Paz -- Located in Managua's Peace Park, the signature lighthouse stands as a long lasting testament to the challenges the nation faces amidst the ravages of war. It also stands as a beacon of hope. The park was opened in 1990 by then President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro. The park has a unique beauty in which symbols of war, such as machine guns and pistols, are interred in concrete.

3. Nueva Catedral -- This architectural marvel leaves many visitors in awe, due to its rather unusual facade. The 63 cupolas reportedly symbolize Nicaragua's 63 Catholic churches. They also provide structural support during earthquakes, as the structure sits above a fault line.

4. Plaza de la Revolucion -- This offers a look into the dark past of Nicaragua. The open park was inaugurated in 1899 by national hero General José Santos Zelaya. The site is rich in history and has witnessed countless protests, parades, romances and more. The tomb of Sandinista commander Carlos Fonseca is also located here.

5. El Puerto -- This is one of the highly recommended places to go out for a drink. Tourists can go grab a few beers and people-watch at this place. There's also a good pool table that people can play a few games on.
