Nokia has launched the latest software update for several Nokia Lumia smartphones with the Windows Phone 8 operating system.

According to Nokia, the software update, known as Lumia Black, is compatible with the Lumia 520, 520T, 521, 525, 620, 625, 720, 720T, 810, 820, 822, 920, 920T, 925, 925T, 928, 1020, 1320 and 1520 models.

In the United States, however, the Lumia Black update is only available for one Lumia device courtesy of one mobile carrier.

Nokia noted the Lumia Black update has rolled out for the Lumia 1020 via AT&T.

In the U.S., the Lumia 520, Lumia 521, Lumia 620, Lumia 820, Lumia 822, Lumia 920, Lumia 925, and Lumia 928 have been confirmed to receive the Lumia Black but are "Waiting for approval." According to Nokia, the term "Waiting for approval" means it's "undergoing final testing with Nokia, country or operator to achieve approval."

In regards to the Lumia 810, the Lumia Black update is listed as "Not available."

The Lumia Black update is not exclusive to the U.S. but will launch over time across Canada and several countries across Africa, the Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

"The Lumia Black update combines a host of new features, improvements in imaging, new apps and app updates from Microsoft and Nokia to make your Lumia smartphone experience even better," noted Nokia Conversations.

Among the new features with Lumia Black is the App Folder, which gives the Lumia smartphone owner the option to organize and personalize their Start screen.

Nokia Glance screen 2.0 is also featured in the update and is able to monitor information in real time from calendar, emails, messages, outlook, or apps such as Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp, to name a few.

"Nokia Lumia Black updates the imaging experiences on your Lumia and makes using the Windows Phone even more fluid. New App Folders and the ability to close apps in multitasker are my personal favorites. I also encourage everyone to try out the Nokia Refocus app that introduces a whole new dimension to photography," said Samuli Hänninen, vice president of software program management for Nokia's Smart Devices business, via Nokia Conversations.

To check if the Lumia Black update is available, Lumia smartphone owners can go to "Settings" to "Phone update."
