How to Buy a New Laptop with Your Old One

By Ma. Elena| Dec 29, 2015

These days, wanting to acquire a new laptop doesn't mean that you have to shell out some hard-earned cash; all you have to do is replace your old laptop for a new one. How so? Here are some tips.

A report by the United Nations University estimated that consumers spend 92 billion pounds of used electronic devices in 2014, a boost from 2013's 87.7 billion pounds.

For those wishing to swap their old laptops for new ones, it's important to take several necessary precautions beforehand, such as deleting all the data stored on the hard drive before handing it over, Mashable wrote. If you're an Apple user, check out these guidelines on how to properly wipe your hard drive. Microsoft's pointers can be found here.

Amazon Trade-In Program

Amazon's Trade-In Program offers an Amazon gift card to customers in exchange for varied items, such as mobile phones, electronics, video games, books, DVDs and CDs. The firm also offers free shipping label, so all consumers have to do is pack their discarded items and mail it.

Best Buy

Best Buy's website provides a state-by-state list of all the items the store is willing to take from you, as well as state-specific recycling information. Aside from scheduled in-home pickups, the company's offer is a free service. Smaller products can be dropped off in a kiosk near Best Buy's store, while larger items can be taken to customer service.

Donations

Mashable reported that the Salvation Army is accepting electronics and Goodwill as well other than large, old televisions.

Gazelle

Gazelle buys and sells used electronics, a list of which can be viewed on the store's website. Customers need to detail the current condition of their items, and the website will give you an offer. Customers can also choose how they would like to get paid for their items: check, Amazon's gift card, or PayPal. Shipping is free of charge, and Gazelle will mail you a box for qualified orders.

Staples

Staples offers an eCash Card for those willing to trade their old electronics - in-store or online. Store officials will inspect your device, and will then offer an amount for its worth. Those who are doing the deal online can ship the items to Staples for free. Afterwards, they will get an eCash Card that can be used in the store or online.

State options

Some states may not be offering an electronics recycling program, and this can be found out through an inquiry on Google, Mashable wrote. The website for your state's department of sanitation might provide drop-off locations or ways on how to collect your items. Customers can also drop by recycling events near them.
