'Downton Abbey' Season 6 Episode 1 Air Date & Cast: 5 Major Spoilers to Look After

By Ma. Elena| May 20, 2015

ITV's highly popular British period drama "Downton Abbey" will air its sixth and final season later this year. As expected, fans of the series are excited about what it has to offer before it ends for good.

Listed below are five major spoilers to watch out for when "Downton Abbey" returns.

Carson-Hughes Wedding

The last season of "Downton Abbey" saw Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) proposing to Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan), with the latter notably accepting the marriage proposal. According to Christian Today, scenes for the couple's wedding are currently being filmed at Burghclere, Hampshire. Laura Carmichael, who portrays Lady Edith, was spotted on set wearing a dress which could only be for a wedding.

New Love Interests

Christian Today added that Thomas (Rob James-Collier) could find a new romantic partner when Season 6 airs. The actor previously stated that he wants the character to be in love with someone after suffering heartbreaks in the past. It should be noted that Thomas is gay, a sexual orientation which wasn't so graciously accepted in the society back in the 1920s.

Season 5 also featured the butler seeking treatment, given that homosexuality was viewed back then as a mental disease that needs to be cured. Fortunately, it was revealed after several episodes that Thomas' sexual orientation wouldn't just go away.

Edith could also find another love interest in the upcoming season. The news outlet noted that she could be paired next to Harry Hadden-Paton's Bertie Pelham, the Brancaster Castle agent first introduced in the Christmas special episode.

Lady Mary Finding Another Love

There's a possibility that Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) will find another romance through Matthew Goode's Henry Talbot, Master Herald wrote. The character is expected to return to the series and become Mary's next partner in life after her husband, Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), died in a tragic accident.

More Drama and High-Society Intrigue

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about Season 6, executive producer Gareth Neame said that they decided to end "Downton Abbey" while the series is still sailing on a high note.

"We wanted to close the doors of 'Downton Abbey' when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans," Neame told Entertainment Weekly. "We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue, but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up."

Character Wrap-Ups

Other returning cast members Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Lily James, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Brendan Coyle, and Maggie Smith will have their respective characters given closures when Season 6 ends. Whether that finality is for the better or worse, fans should still stay tuned.

Master Herald noted that the sixth season of "Downton Abbey" will air in the U.K. before 2015 ends, with the U.S. telecast expected to be shown in January 2016.
