MLB Free Agency Rumors 2014 Updates: New York Mets, Curtis Granderson Still In Talks

The New York Mets and free agent hitter Curtis Granderson are reportedly still in talk despite the slugger's steep asking price worth $64 million over four years, a source close to situation reported on Thursday.

According to Newsday, Granderson is reportedly looking for a contract worth $16 million per season. The Mets were reported to be interested to sign the All-Star slugger, but only on a three-year contract.

"According to an industry source, the free-agent outfielder has been seeking a four-year deal worth roughly $16 million per season. The price would be steep for the Mets, who nonetheless are involved in serious discussions to bring the former Yankees outfielder across town," Newsday stated.

Looking For Firepower

Granderson is reportedly viewed by the Mets as the perfect free agent pickup who could boost their floundering offense and provide them additional firepower alongside third baseman David Wright.

The 32-year old Granderson batted .229 with seven home runs in 61 games for the New York Yankees in an injury-marred 2013 season.

Granderson, who racked up 84 home runs in his previous two seasons with the Bronx Bombers, rejected the Yankees' qualifying offer worth $14.1 million for a chance to test the free agency market.

The Mets originally targeted former Texas Rangers hitter Nelson Cruz, but they shifted their attention towards getting Granderson because of his propensity to make plays with his batting power and base-running ability.

Corner Outfielder

If the Mets honor Granderson's asking price, the deal will be easily the biggest contract the ballclub has signed ever since inking outfielder Jason Bay to a four-year, $66 million deal. Bay just batted .234 with 26 homers through three disappointing seasons before the Mets finally decided to buy out the slugger's fourth year.

The Mets are hopeful Granderson's power will translate well at Citi Field. They are considering changing his position from centerfielder to a corner outfielder.
