Rafael Nadal News: Rafa All Set To Make History Next Year

By Onchie Ebriega| Nov 27, 2013

World's no.1 Rafael Nadal is looking to book his place in history next year by becoming the first player after Rod Laver to win multiple titles in each of four Grand Slam tournaments, Nadal's head coach and uncle Toni Nadal told The Tennis Channel this week.

Nadal, who already racked up 13 Grand Slam crowns in his career, can join Laver as the only players to win at least two titles in every major tournament (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon Open and US Open).

The Mallorcan Bull can achieve this goal as early as January when he guns for Title No.2 in the upcoming Australian Open Championship in Melbourne. The 27-year-old Nadal has eight French Open titles and two crowns in Wimbledon and U.S. Open championships.

The Spaniard won his first Australian Open title in 2009 when he overcame Roger Federer in a five-setter final showdown 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(7-3), 3-6, 6-2, but hasn't caught a break in the last four editions of the hard court tourney.  Now, Nadal is one Australian Open title away from achieving a rare feat, the one that would surely bolster his credentials as the greatest player of all time.

"The challenge in 2014 will be to win Australia, because it would achieve something only Rod Laver did, which is twice winning the four [Grand Slams]," Toni Nadal told that journalist David Nadal via Tennis Channel.

The elder Nadal said he could not believe his nephew has already accomplished something special in his tennis career, surpassing the Grand Slam haul of his long time idol Bjorn Borg. Still, the trainer said he's very much excited to see Rafa making another historic feat next year.

"I do not put Rafael on a pedestal because it's my family, although I know that he is one of the best ever," he added.

Of course, rivals Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer are out to spoil Nadal's goal in the Australian Open. Djokovic has been gaining momentum over the Spaniard as of late while Federer is looking for a comeback season after miserable play this year . Murray, on the other hand, is scheduled to return from his rehabilitation after undergoing back surgery.
