'Doctor Who' Season 8 Spoilers: New Photos Released From 'Doctor Who: Day of the Doctor' 50th Anniversary Special

Excited "Doctor Who" fans can continue fangirling by looking at a series of new photos released from the 50th anniversary special of "Doctor Who," which is less than a week away. A sneak preview of a scene from the special has also been released.

The photos are from the "Day of the Doctor" anniversary special, featuring guest stars John Hurt and Billie Piper, as well as the tenth Doctor David Tennant and co-star Jenna Coleman.

The sneak preview from the episode features a scene in which Matt Smith has an encounter with his predecessor, David Tennant.

The summary for the landmark special reads: "In 2013, something terrible is awakening in London's National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion. All of reality is at stake as the Doctor's own dangerous past comes back to haunt him."

The 75-minute episode will be one of the last ones featuring Matt Smith as the Doctor. It was recently announced that Peter Capaldi will be succeeding Smith as the 12th regeneration of the Time Lord. Capaldi is a 55-year-old Scottish actor known for playing the acerbic Malcolm Tucker in BBC political comedy "The Thick Of It" and in the film "In the Loop."

David Tennant, who is starring in the BBC America crime drama "Broadchurch," shared his feelings about filming the episode with Entertainment Weekly.

"I suppose you'd expect me to say we're new best friends and I love him like a brother," Tennant said. "But that is sort of how it was. I had a fantastic time and that wouldn't necessarily have been the case. I'm coming back onto a show that's effectively somebody else's show and used to be mine and that's potentially quite a weird situation to be in. Going back to something I knew so well and had such fun memories of might have backfired. It's a quite rare set of circumstances: Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig don't get to play James Bond next to each other. But actually it felt familiar enough that it was like coming home and working with Matt proved to be a real joy.

"I hope I'm speaking for him when I say we really enjoyed bouncing of each other and playing sort of two aspects of the same character," Tennant continued. "It was everything that I hoped it might be and nothing that I feared it could be."

The 50th anniversary special will be followed by an extra-special Christmas episode in which Peter Capaldi will be introduced as the tweflth incarnation of the Doctor.

Check out a sneak preview of a scene from "Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor," which will be simulcast globally next Saturday, Nov. 23, at 2:50 pm ET, with an encore airing at 7 p.m. that evening.
