The annual MTV Europe Music Awards held at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland on November 9, was a big event graced by the hottest music artists of today. It was a big night for pop singer Ariana Grande and boy band One Direction, for they won some of the biggest awards of the show. Performances by a host of stars also lit up the stage.

Ariana Grande Defies Gravity in 'Problem' and 'Break Free' Performance

The 21-year-old pop singer showcased her vocal prowess (sans featured artist Iggy Azalea) with her single, "Problem," which also won the Best Song award. As the song started, Grande emerged on the SSE Hydro Stage from a spiraling black and white vortex, MTV reports. In the second half of her performance, Grande was raised into a glass sphere to be lifted to another larger stage while singing "Break Free," another one of her hits.

Grande also surprised the MTV EMAs crowd by not wearing her hair in a ponytail. In an interview with Hollywood Life while walking the red carpet of the awards show, she said, "My hair's down and I feel so naked like that."

Aside from winning Best Song, Grande also went home with the Best Female award, MTV notes.

Nicki Minaj Debuts New Track 'Bed of Lies'

Event host Nicki Minaj not only displayed revealing and sexy outfits, she also performed a medley of songs during the 2014 MTV EMAs, according to another report from Hollywood Life.

Minaj, who bagged the Best Hip-Hop award of the night, made her entrance in the uncensored awards show "suspended from the ceiling with wires" and saying, "What the f--k is going, Glasgow?" as she was lowered onto the stage, E! Online reports.

The 31-year-old sexy singer started off her three-song set with 2010 surefire hit "Super Bass," and then slowed down with a special surprise number she has been hinting about on her Instagram page. Together with Skylar Grey, Minaj sang her new track "Bed of Lies," which will be included in the rapper's upcoming new album "The Pinkprint," Hollywood Life notes. After "Bed of Lies," Minaj finished with a sexy performance of "Anaconda," another one of her well-known tracks.

Fifth Harmony Electrifies with 'Sledgehammer'

Teen pop girl band Fifth Harmony - consisting of Camila Cabello, Ally Brooke, Normani Hamilton, Lauren Jauregui, and Dinah Jane Hansen - put on a good show with their brand new single "Sledgehammer" from their upcoming debut album "Reflection," according to another report from MTV.

The girls were all wearing sexy black outfits in the EMA kick-off show hosted by Nick Cannon in Miami, Florida. "Ally's high note topped the whole performance off, lighting up the stage despite the sheets of rain, which was pouring down on the crowd but was no match for Lauren's hair," MTV further reports.

Fifth Harmony won the Best U.S. Act award, E! Online notes, but lost the Artist on the Rise honor to boy band 5 Seconds of Summer.

Alicia Keys Serenades the Crowd with Heart-Wrenching 'We Are Here' Number

The very pregnant Alicia Keys took to the piano to sing her latest thought provoking and political new song "We Are Here," MTV reports in another article. Keys' performance, however, was held at the nearby O2 Academy instead of at the SSE Hydro Arena.

"While she sang soulfully about the tragic global conflicts that dominate news headlines every day, the screen behind her was illuminated with images of extended arms, reaching out to each other as audience members raised protest signs of peace and harmony," MTV News describes of the singer's performance. "We Are Here" was nominated for Best Song with a Message, but lost to Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts."

"There was plenty of skin and gyrating in earlier performances throughout the show, but Keys ended things on a much more serene and thoughtful note, leaving everyone with something to think about," MTV further reports.

Nick Jonas Gets Soaked for 'Jealous' Performance

Former Jonas Brothers member Nick Jonas sang hit single "Jealous" also at MTV EMAs kick-off special in Miami. The newest sex symbol, as dubbed by Hollywood Life, was in the middle of a downpour while performing his song and even "sealed the deal by ripping off his black jacket to soak up some of the downpour," according to a report from MTV. Jonas then proceeded to do a full-on knee slide onstage.

When asked if "Jealous" was based on a real-life occurrence with girlfriend Olivia Culpo, Jonas revealed, "We were out somewhere and someone was staring at [Olivia] for a little bit too long. It was uncomfortably long. I kind of got in my head about it for a moment. That's been the really interesting thing about this song and whole idea of jealousy: It's not the best character trait, but it's a very human thing. I think it happens to everybody at different moments. I'm in a very happy relationship and it was all in my head. That's what I pulled from this experience and the song," as quoted by Hollywood Life.
