Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, the son-in-law of Osama bin Laden, has been given a life sentence in prison.

According to CBS News, the sentence was given Tuesday on grounds of "acting as al Qaeda's spokesman after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks."

Abu Ghaith said that the sentence is sure to prompt "a backlash in the Muslim world", reported CTV News.

"Today, at the same moment where you are shackling my hands and intend to bury me alive, you are at the same time unleashing the hands of hundreds of Muslim youth, and you are removing the dust of their minds, and they will join the rally of the free men," the outlet quoted of the al Qaeda convict.

U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan, the person who sentenced Abu Ghaith to life in prison, pointed out that Osama bin Laden's relative seem to be showing no remorse whatsoever.

"You haven't evidenced any doubt about the justification for what was done, and as recently as 15 minutes ago, you continue to threaten," said Kaplan.

"You, sir, in my assessment, are committed to doing everything you can to assist in carrying out al Qaeda's agenda of killing Americans, guilty or innocent, combatant or noncombatant, adult or babies, without regard to the carnage that's caused," he added.

CNN reported that according to Abu Ghaith, he only "assisted" bin Laden by serving as a speaker on "spiritual topics."

"Just after the [Sept. 11, 2001] attacks, the al Qaeda leader summoned Abu Ghaith to his remote mountain hiding place and asked him to help 'deliver a message to the world' on the organization's behalf, the religious scholar testified," stated CNN.

CBS News quoted the Kuwaiti imam as saying in his defense, "I didn't go to meet with him to bless if he had killed hundreds of Americans or not. I went to meet with him to know what he wanted."

CNN added that Abu Ghaith's "The storm of airplanes will not stop" speech in an October 2001 video was provided by bin Laden to him in "bullet points."

The defense has not seemed to influence the jury which had a unanimous verdict.

CTV News said that Abu Ghaith, though sentenced to life imprisonment, managed to smile and shake hands with his attorneys after the sentence was read.

For the United States, the conclusion serves as a small but still significant consolation to the families and friends of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack victims.
