The second season HBO's True Detective will star Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. HBO made the announcement Tuesday.

Farrell previously confirmed the casting on his own. In an interview with The Sunday World, which was published on Sept. 22, 2014, he divulged his involvement with the popular drama.

Vaughn on the other hand remained a mystery until today, though his name had been included as possible leads were mentioned in recent weeks. Justin Lin of Fast Five and Community fame also confirmed rumors when it was revealed that he would be the director for the first two episodes of the season. The season will have eight episodes in total.

This announcement from HBO concludes months of speculation as to who would take over top billing for True Detective since the conclusion of season one. Deadline.com claimed that Farrell was involved with one of the main roles back in July while rumors of Vaughn starring in the show were a part of various trade reports in August.

Per HBO's press release, season two of True Detective will follow three police officers and one career criminal working to solve the cause of a murder case riddled with conspiracy.

Farrell will play Ray Valerco, a detective who has ties to the mob and is torn between his allegiances to his department and to a particular mobster. Vaughn will play Frank Semyon, the aforementioned career criminal. Semyon is in danger of losing the criminal empire that he built when he tries to move into a legitimate enterprise he is halted by the killing of a business partner.

"I know very little about it," Farrell said in his interview with The Sunday World. "We're shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids."

The press release also says that there are two more casting announcements that have yet to be made. Other names that have been in the mix for the roles include Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights, Rachel McAdams from The Notebook and Elisabeth Moss from Mad Men.

Season one of True Detective was very successful. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey starred and were both nominated for the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series, which was eventually won by Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad. True Detective season two will begin production later this year. The premier date has not been announced, but it will likely premier sometime in August, similar to season one.
