A bus crash close to New Castle, Delaware left one woman dead and several dozens injured.

The incident occurred on Sunday around 4:20 pm near Red Lion Road at Route 1, reported the Los Angeles Times. The bus, operated by Am USA Express Inc. in New York, overturned and flipped on its side.

ABC News reported that according to state police, "the bus lost control" on the steep ramp. However, further investigation is needed to confirm the theory.

"We're still investigating the cause of this crash. We're interviewing passengers and the driver to see what exactly happened," Sgt. Paul G. Shavack of the Delaware State Police said, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times.

According to Shavack, the bus was carrying 49 passengers and one driver. Only one out of the 50 individuals inside the bus died from the crash.

Police state that the casualty, an adult woman, "got ejected from the bus, which then fell on top of her," reported CBS News. The woman, still unnamed, died on the scene.

The rest of the passengers, including two children, sustained mild to severe injuries. CBS News said that 5 are critically injured. The bus driver was not critically injured, SF Gate noted.

No one witnessed the bus crash, The News Journal reported. However, CBS News said that Elvis Cruz and his friend saw the already overturned bus when they drove up to the scene.

"It's almost from like a war zone," CBS News quoted Cruz as saying. "Everyone was so cut up, missing bits and pieces of arms and face. There was no one on the scene without blood on them except for me."

Cruz and his friend reportedly handed out first aid kit items before responders made it to the crash scene. The two also managed to help amid language barriers.

"Unfortunately there were a lot of people speaking different languages. There was kind of a communication gap between us but then when we went to the bus, we saw there were people still underneath and people still trying to get out," said Cruz, as quoted by ABC News.

The News Journal said New Castle County paramedic crews triaged wounds after the incident. The news outlet added that according to Paramedic Sgt. Michael A. McColley of New Castle County Emergency Medical Services, "16 ambulances from fire companies and emergency medical service agencies treated and transported the injured" to several hospitals including Christiana Hospital, Wilmington Hospital and Middletown ER.
