The Baltimore Ravens announced Monday that have terminated the contract of running back Ray Rice following the shocking video that surfaced that showed the NFL player punching his then-fiancee in February.

The NFL released a short statement that read, "The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of RB Ray Rice this afternoon.

Rice's expulsion comes on the heels of Rice being suspended by the league for the opening two games of the NFL season. Players, staff and fans of the NFL are calling for the league to re-evaluate its policies and punishments for domestic violence cases.

The video shows Rice and Janay Palmer, who is now his wife, entering an elevator at a hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey seven months ago. As the doors close, the couple appears to argue before Rice punches Palmer in the face, seemingly knocker her unconscious. As the elevator stops at a floor, Rice drags her body out and leaves her face down for several minutes before taking her out into the hall.

A few months after the incidents NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Rice without pay and fined him an additional game check for "conduct detrimental to the NFL." According to multiple sources, no one at the NFL had seen the newly released footage of the incident until Monday morning.  Many now suggest that the two game suspension was not nearly adequate enough of a punishment for this scenario.

Rice previously addressed his actions at a press conference in July, where he said that his actions were, "inexcusable and that the couple had enrolled in counseling.

"We're taking the necessary steps to move forward," he said. "My job is to lead my family. My job is to lead my wife. My job is to lead in whatever I do. And if I'm not leading by example, then my family crumbles.
