Common Core Under Attack as US Government is Sued Over Changes to Curriculum

There are 44 states that use Common Core standards in elementary school classrooms. The U.S. government was sued on Wednesday over the standards which were put into place in the last several years and were expected to raise child performance in reading and math, areas that are always under the watchful eye of government education officials.

Likely Republican presidential candidate Gov. Bobby Jindal, a former supporter of Common Core, filed the federal suit, according to McClatchy. Conservatives are calling out the Obama administration over the educational standards, and it will be a "rallying cry" this upcoming election, says the report.

Jindal's suit says that the government has forced states to adopt Common Core by offering federal grants to states that ranked high in child performance under the standards. According to the Common Core standards children must meet specific achievements for every grade level by the end of the academic year. The standards were created, with state officials supporting it across the U.S., in 2009. "The Obama administration backed them and provided incentives for states that raised their standards in order to prepare students for college or work," the McClatchy report explained.

The suit also contends that states got waivers for the previous education standards under No Child Left Behind from the government, and also says the Obama administration, "coerced" states to use Common Core preferred tests, or risk federal dollars.

Jindal showed his disapproval for Common Core by saying, "The federal government has hijacked and destroyed the Common Core initiative," and added that, "Common Core is the latest effort by big government disciples to strip away state rights and put Washington, D.C., in control of everything."

Jindal was on record previously as a big supporter of Common Core and called it "an innovative idea to create a set of base-line standards that could be 'voluntarily' used by the states," but now in voicing his displeasure, Jindal has said that Common Core "has turned into a scheme by the federal government to nationalize curriculum."
