Former Ms. Spain, Patricia Yurena Rodriguez, has become the first openly gay national beauty queen. The 24-year-old pageant contestant took to Instagram to reveal that she was indeed in a lesbian relationship.

The intimate photo, simply captioned "Romeo and Juliet," showed the pair in an intimate moment. Both wearing white tops, Patricia's significant other lay on top of the beauty queen and stared into her eyes.

In addition to this "first," E! Online noted that Rodriguez "is also the country's first Miss España contestant to win the pageant twice."

To date, the upload has received 7,000 likes and over 1,000 comments. She then followed with another post thanking fans for their support and well-wishes for both her and her girlfriend.

"Gracias a todos por vuestros comentarios," Patricia graciously thanked her fans.

A number of Instagram comments applauded the courage of the beauty for coming out so publicly. One in particular was laylasp211 who wrote: "I applaud your bravery, the Latina culture like so many others refuse to acknowledge homosexuality. It's your right to love whoever you choose!"

"I do not regret what I did," explained Rodriguez to local Spanish newspaper, La Opinion de Tenerife.

Explaining that there was no motive or underlying reason for the announcement, the beauty queen said she just felt an internal need to share her love story with the rest of the world. "I'm thrilled with what is happening to me."

"I published the picture completely spontaneously and in an impulsive manner. Thank you for all your support," Yurena tweeted via NY Daily News.

Yurena won the crown in 2008 and 2013 but with the company running the pageant, Certamen Miss Espana SL, having filed for bankruptcy last year, Yurena may very well be the last beauty queen for Spain, said the site. Rodriquez was the runner up to Venezuela's Maria Gabriela Isler during the 2013 Miss Universe Pageant held in Moscow, Russia.

Who is the lucky lady with Patricia? That would be Vanesa Cortes who is a musician and DJ. Rodriguez told Costa Rican newspaper La Nación that she and her partner met through friends last year before the pageant.

Good news for the loving couple? While Spain has a large Roman Catholic population, the country has legalized same-sex marriage almost a decade ago in 2005.

Other celebrities who have come out proudly include "X-Men" star Ellen Page, "How I Met Your Mother" actor Neil Patrick Harris, and "The Big Bang Theory" funny man Jim Parsons.
