Cameron Maybin, who plays as the outfielder for the San Diego Padres, has been suspended for 25 games after he tested positive for amphetamine.

The Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday that Maybin's suspension, a first for the season, is in relation to his violation of the drug prevention and treatment program.

Reuters reported that Maybin's suspension is effective immediately as ordered by the commissioner of baseball.

In a statement released by the MLB Players association, Maybin explained why he tested positive for the substance. He said he changed his medication to treat his attention deficit disorder.

"Unfortunately, in my attempts to switch back to a medicine that had been previously OK'd, I neglected to follow all the rules and as a result I tested positive," Maybin added in his statement.

He also assured the people that it was a "genuine effort" to treat his condition.

"I was not trying in any way to gain an advantage in my baseball career. I understand that I must accept responsibility for this mistake and I will take my punishment and will not challenge my suspension. I apologize to my family, friends, fans, teammates, and the entire Padres organization," Maybin said.

According to USA Today, Maybin had previously tested positive for the drug but was only given a warning. As a rule, any player who will be tested positive for amphetamines for the first time, will receive a warning and will be subjected to further drug tests. Automatic suspension awaits players who will violate the drug program a second time.

Forbes added that if Maybin tests positive again for stimulants, he will be suspended for 80 games while a fourth offense can lead to his permanent suspension.

Maybin's suspension, according to USA Today, is another bump in the relationship of the player and the Padres. In 2012, Maybin signed a five year contract with the team worth $25 million.

According to Forbes, the player ranked 10th overall in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft by the Detroit Tigers. He was hitting .247 with 43 hits, RBIs, and one home run for this season.

In the USA Today report, it was noted that he only played for 14 games last season because of a series of injuries that disappointed not only him but the Padres as well.

His team and his fans certainly hope that he meant his apology and that he will return stronger and better after his suspension period.
