Former San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley is the newest addition to the New York Yankees roster of players after the team's General Manager Brian Cashman acquired him to step up their game against the Baltimore Orioles which is currently leading the division.

Earlier, the Yankees also snatched Brandon McCarthy from the Arizona Diamondbacks, The New York Times reports. The article adds that the team got Headley in exchange for infielder Yangervis Solarte and minor league pitcher Rafael De Paula.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he applauds the owners for their work and decision in acquiring and trading players.

"They are trying to get us better. It's the second move that we've made, and McCarthy has pitched well for us since we got him. We're trying to upgrade our lineup and our defense, and I applaud it. They are giving us opportunities to win, and that's what we want," Girardi told The New York Times.

The switch-hitting Headley has recently turned 29 and is on the final year of contract with the Padres. According to The New York Times, Cashman said that Headley was not the reason for the recent trades on the team and even called Headley a "two-month" rental.

The New York Times notes that the season has not been a good one for Headley as he hit only .229 for the Padres and made 7 home runs. But the same report explains that his statistics has somehow improved despite an injury.

Yahoo Sports also notes that injuries indeed hurt Headley's performance but that his defense for this season is "sound" adding to his tremendous 2012 batting and career home runs.

But the same report says that the player would not qualify for the $15M offer of the team as he was traded midseason. Yahoo Sports also reports that his former team, the Padres, is not interested in getting him back for the said price. Yahoo, however, notes that his stay with the Yankees can greatly boost his stats and make him a very marketable player not only to the Padres and Yankees but also to other teams in the league.

The New York Times notes that Headley arrived in the Bronx on Tuesday just in time for the Yankees game against the Texas Rangers. Girardi also adds that Headley will play as the third baseman of the team for the rest of the season.
