The TV series True Detective has quickly become known for capturing the dramatically dark aspects of Louisiana life, and is on its way to a successful first season.

True Detective was awarded with 12 Emmy nominations including Best Drama, a tough category and long shot going up against the likes of Breaking Bad.

The show struck a nerve with fans thanks to its surreal, philosophical nature, and its fantastic cast. Actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were cast during season one as two obsessive detectives who are trying to solve a string of cult-like murders along the Louisiana coast and backwoods.

The hop-scotching story narrative, layered on top of the strong actors and plot lines, gave the the show an interesting twist that kept viewers on their toes.

Nic Pizzolatto's crime anthology differs from other television series in the way that ultimately, there will be no single story line that will branch seasons together.

After season one came to an end, fans couldn't wait to see McConaughey and Harrelson suit up for the next one, but unfortunately, that isn't meant to be. The writing style of the show will have a completely different mystery, with different characters and settings each season.

With McConaughey and Harrelson's absence, there has been immense speculation about who is next in line to take up the detective roles.

Initially Brad Pitt was linked to season two saying, "it's the show everyone wants to be on, because the writing and the roles are just so exquisite and complex."

Television series used to be looked at as a step-down from the big screen of film. True Detective is changing this rhetoric with its in-depth character analysis and theme driven story plots.

Rumor has it that the strength of the first season has attracted stars like Michael Fassbender, Christian Bale, Josh Brolin and Joaquin Phoenix. It is not clear yet which, if any of these actors will be offered the role.

Deadline has reported that Colin Farrell is in negotiations with the shows producers, but HBO has yet to confirm any casting information.

Nic Pizzolatto has said that the series will move its setting to California, where there will be the standard two detective combo.
