EA and Ghost Games reveal that there won't be a new "Need for Speed" until 2015.
GameSpot notes that it will be the first time that Ghost Games and EA skip a year in releasing the franchise. The report notes that since 2001, there has been a new "Need for Speed" game every year.
Ghost Games, the developer of the upcoming title, is reportedly given an "extended development window," for the 2015 installment of the franchise, adds GameSpot.
In the announcement, made by Marcus Nilsson, the Executive Producer and General Manager of Ghost Games, the studio implies that the delay will be for the better. "We are already deep in development on our next game and want to make this promise to you: we will listen to you. We're going to give you the game you've been asking for. It will be the game you deserve, but to do that will take us some time," reads the post.
The announcement went on to say that the developers will be working closely with the fans of the franchise this time. Ghost Games says that "Need for Speed" fans will be hearing from the developers regularly "because [they] need [the fans'] help to shape the future of ‘Need for Speed.'"
According to GameRant, the delay might be partly due to the layoffs in the company saying, "the now-defunct EA Black Box employees [liken] their grueling work on the franchise to a ‘death march.'" The layoffs also reportedly shook the confidence of fans of the franchise, adds the outlet.
Although the game has been confirmed to be delayed, the developers promise in the announcement, "We've made the decision to not release a Need for Speed in 2014, so we can work towards a highly innovative Need for Speed in 2015. An experience built on a foundation we know you'll greatly look forward to."
