It looks like Microsoft is not about to lag behind Sony when it comes to virtual reality technology.

In an interview with Fortune, head of Xbox Phil Spencer says that virtual reality is "really interesting." The outlet asked Spencer, "With Facebook acquiring Oculus Rift and Sony entering VR with Project Morpheus, what impact do you feel virtual reality will have on gaming moving forward?"

Spencer replied, "Virtual reality is a really interesting area, especially for games, and while it seems like it's been 'just over the horizon' for the last 20 years or so, I think we could finally start seeing it prove out soon for both gamers and developers."

The Xbox head added, "As I talked about at GDC, our Microsoft research team has been playing with virtual reality for quite a while, and while we don't have anything to officially announce, it's clearly an area people are excited about. The potential is definitely there."

Indeed, the Xbox-maker has been rumored to be developing its own virtual reality device as early as 2012. In a report by GameSpot, Microsoft is alleged to be "working on its own VR/AR technology, and even paid as much as $150 million to acquire assets related to wearable technology earlier this year."

Specifically, Microsoft is allegedly working on augmented-reality glasses. "This endeavor will be called 'Fortaleza' and is planned to launch sometime in 2014. The glasses will reportedly run on Wi-Fi and 4G connections," says GameSpot in an earlier report.

No official info from Microsoft regarding the alleged AR "Fortaleza" is available yet but top rival Sony is openly testing out Project Morpheus, its own VR headset. In fact, Mark Zuckerberg has even requested for a tech demo of the device before buying Oculus Rift, as previously reported.

Whether or not Microsoft is truly looking to release a VR/AR device still remains unconfirmed but as Spencer noted, with the Xbox-maker already toying with the idea, it is safe to say that a new brand of futuristic technology might just be on the horizon.
