Marcos Maidana is aiming to become the first fighter to win against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and his trainer Robert Garcia believes that the Argentine champion is capable of pulling off an upset in their upcoming showdown.

Garcia told BoxingScene.com that Mayweather's unblemished record will not bother Maidana in their fight scheduled on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, saying that even the best boxers have suffered defeats.

"The very best fighters have lost. Leonard lost, Ali lost," said Garcia, referring to Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali, who looked unbeatable during the primes of their respective careers, but also tasted defeat at points in their careers.

Garcia added that defeating Mayweather is a gargantuan task, but he pointed out that it is not impossible to do, saying that Maidana will train harder than ever for the biggest fight of his career.

"Everyone thinks beating Floyd is impossible, but there will come a time where he's going to have to lose. For this fight, we are going to train hard. Maidana has the heart, the punch, and he won't be lacking anything [in training camp]. We are going to enter [this fight] with every desire to win," Garcia said.

Garcia pointed out that Maidana is no stranger to being an underdog, especially with the 30-year-old Argentinian playing that same role against previously undefeated Adrien Broner. Maidana defied the odds and experts' predictions beating Broner in his last bout.

Maidana knocked Broner down in Round Two and Round Eight of their WBA welterweight title showdown in December en route to a unanimous decision victory—a win that earned him a chance to face Mayweather, where he hopes to hand the future Hall of Famer his first loss of his storied boxing career.

"Everybody thought that Broner was going to get the win over Maidana. Broner was the next Mayweather, and Maidana came to the United States and not only did he beat him—he humiliated him," Garcia stressed.
