Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly begun discussing a possible contract extension in hopes of striking a long-term agreement that would work well for both parties.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, no deal is imminent at this point, but sources confirmed that the 49ers recently sat down with Kaepernick's representatives. Sources said that both parties had a solid discussion, which could lead to a lucrative deal before the 2014 NFL season.

The 49ers reportedly laid down their possible offer during the talks, which centered on the length of the deal and possible salary.

The financial side of the deal is not expected to be a problem for either party as Kaepernick previously expressed willingness to accept a "balanced" deal in order to give the 49ers a room to assemble a competitive roster moving forward.

"I think it's a balance. You want to be paid fairly for what you feel like you're doing in comparison to your peers," Kaepernick said. "But at the same time, you have to realize that if we want to get Anquan Boldin back, if we want Donte Whitner to come back, we're going to have to make moves to get them back and there has to be room for everyone."

Kaepernick, who is still playing under his $5.9 million rookie contract that pays him less than $1 million in 2014, did not clarify how much money he is expecting from the 49ers when he talked about the balanced deal.

However, sources indicated that the 26-year-old quarterback, who led the 49ers to three straight NFC title games and one Super Bowl, could accept as low as $15 million per year.

"The parameters of 'balance' could mean different things to both sides-does that mean Kaepernick will ask for $20M per instead of $22M? Or does it mean he'll talk about $16M-17M per with steps to get him up to $20M? Either way, it sounds like $15M to $16M is the floor for an average salary here," the San Jose Mercury News noted.

The initial discussion between the 49ers and Kaepernick's representative could put an end to talks suggesting that team is still unsure if it will offer a new contract to the former Nevada standout this offseason.
