On the latest "Downton Abbey," suitors flocked to Mary and questions arose about Mr. Bates when an unexpected incident occurred.

In the episode, Anna (Joanne Froggatt) finally tells Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) who attacked her when Mary tells her that Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) is coming back to visit Downton. A shocked Mary decides to have lunch with Gillingham, and tells him that he should fire his valet, Mr. Green, but doesn't give him a reason why.

Lord Gillingham is making more frequent visits to Downton, unable to shake his infatuation with Mary. At one wonderfully awkward dinner with both Lord Gillingham and Mr. Blake (Julian Ovenden), Gillingham's jealousy rears its head when Blake compliments Mary. It's clear that Blake is becoming endeared to Mary after they mucked about together with the estate's new shipment of pigs.

Later, Gillingham tells Mary that he wants to break off his engagement, and is determined to woo Mary at any cost.

Meanwhile, Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) is trying to figure out what to do about her out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Her Aunt Rosamund (Samantha Bond) comes to Downton to help Edith hatch a plan. Edith wants to give the child to a family on Downton's land, but Rosamund tells her that would create unwelcome suspicion. She then comes up with the idea to go on a sabbatical with Edith, during which she can have the child and ensure that it is adopted by a loving family.

Rosamund tells Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) that she and Edith are going to Switzerland to "improve their French." Yet, the shrewd Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) knows something isn't quite right about their story.

Violet calls her daughter and granddaughter to her home, where she gets to the bottom of what is really going on.

Back at Downton, Alfred (Matt Milne) has sent a letter to Ivy (Cara Theobold) that his father has passed away, so he is coming to Downton to visit. But the letter contains more big news: a marriage proposal to Ivy. Ivy is flattered but doesn't love Alfred, so she turns him down.

The hapless Daisy (Sophie McShera) is upset at the news, but is even more upset at Ivy for breaking his heart.

Tom Branson (Allen Leech) is then out in town when he sees Lady Rose (Lily James) at a romantic lunch with the jazz singer Jack Ross (Gary Carr). He immediately tells Mary, knowing the relationship would never gain anyone's approval. Rose tells Mary that they're engaged, and that she wants to see her "mother's face crumble" when she tells her about the engagement.

Mary travels to London to tell Jack to break if off with Rose, telling him their interracial relationship would be under constant disparagement and attack. Also, he tells her that while Rose does like him, she really wants to marry him to get back at her mother.

Meanwhile, Branson runs into Sarah Bunting (Daisy Lewis), a woman with whom he shares a passion for politics.

The annual bazaar is then held at Downton, during which Daisy would normally be in attendance. Yet, Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol) tells Daisy to take the day off to visit her late husband's father.

Lord Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) returns with Barrow (Rob James-Collier) on the day of the bazaar, surprising everyone with his unexpected return.

Lord Gillingham shows up at the bazaar as well to tell Mary that Mr. Green was found dead in Piccadilly. Mary tells Anna, who knows that Bates (Brendan Coyle) went to York for the day yesterday, and did not say why he was going. Mary and Anna now suspect that Bates killed Green.

After a talk with her father-in-law, Daisy comes back to Downton and parts as friends with Alfred, who tells her that he never saw how good Daisy was to him. Daisy tells him that she loved him, and gives him a basket of treats as a parting gift.

Next, in an adorable scene, Mrs. Patmore tells Daisy that she is proud of her for handling the situation so maturely.

Out at the bazaar, Mr. Blake confesses to Mary that he has feelings for her, and but she promptly turns him down. A determined Blake says he won't give up on her without a fight, setting up a rivalry between him and Lord Gillingham.

On the upcoming season finale, Rose will have her coming out ball, suitors will continue to vie for Mary, and Shirley McLaine and Paul Giamatti will guest star at Cora's mother and brother from America. Also, Daisy will catch someone's eye, and either Daisy or Ivy could soon be leaving Downton.

Watch the promo below for the upcoming episode, which will be the last episode before the Christmas special at the end of 2014.

The series finale airs Sunday, Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. on PBS.
