The men's ski jumping competition at the 2014 Sochi Olympics will enter its final phase on Monday with the much-awaited team event, where traditional powers Austria, Japan, Poland and Germany are expected to make some noise.

Austria was tipped to dominate the men's ski jumping event, but world's No. 4 Gregor Schlierenzauer and the rest of the Austrian jumpers surprisingly bombed out of medal contention in the men's normal and giant hill event.

Schlierenzauer, who racked up 52 World Cup victories, finished just 11th in the normal hill and seventh in the large hill. Meanwhile, Michael Hayboeck ended up in eighth place in the large hill event, making it perhaps the worst outing for Austrian in any Olympic men's ski jumping event.

"We are not in the best shape, but we are all sportsmen who have won a lot so don't forget us. We are not the big favourites," Schlierenzauer told reporters via Yahoo Sports.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Andreas Kofler believes the Austrians are becoming less dominant in men's ski jumping because of the emergence of other contenders such as Japan, Germany, Slovenia and Poland.

"It's always the same in ski jumping, it's a mental sport. You have to feel confident to have good jumps," said the fifth-ranked Kofler, who won the gold with Austrian's ski jumping team in 2006 and 2010 Olympics.

Of course, all eyes will be on Poland, led by superstar ski jumper Kamil Stoch, who bagged both the normal and large hill events. Still, the depth of Japan, led by 41-year old Noriaki Kasai (silver medalist in the large hill), and the surging German squad will make things interesting in the final round.

The medal round of the men's ski jumping team finals will start at 1:15 p.m. EST. NBC Sports will cover the men's finals while NBC Sports Extra will provide free live streaming from Sochi, Russia. Results and updates will be available on ESPN.
