All eyes were on the Obamas at Tuesday night's state dinner, and Michelle Obama made sure not to disappoint.

In dress with a beaded and lace black bodice with a full skirt in liberty blue, the First Lady made a splash. Carolina Herrera, a Venezuelan-born designer, designed the dress.

The White House said the gown was made at Herrera's New York atelier, according to CBS news. A press release from the White House describes the dress as a "black hand-sewn beaded embroidery appliqué scallop-edged top over a liberty blue silk faille corset with a wide black velvet belt detail and liberty blue silk faille inverted pleat long skirt and train."

Susan Swimmer, author of "Michelle Obama: First Lady of Fashion and Style," said the dress was a different look for the First Lady.

"From the White House to Versailles, it's not that far," she said. "It's much more keeping in a French aesthetic than I've seen her wear before. It's very French in terms of how ornate it is and the use of lace and the velvet sash."

Once again, Michelle Obama proves she's a smart dresser. The dinner was to honor French President Francois Hollande, and the blue in her dress called back to the blue found in both the U.S. and French flags.

Obama choosing Herrera is no great surprise, as she has worn the label in the past, but it is a great coincidence since the designer just showed a collection that feels very Jackie O, a First Lady Michelle Obama has been compared to.

For fall 2014, Herrera presented a modernized version of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Models dressed in re-designed pillbox hats, sophisticated separates and dramatic evening wear walked the runway.

Seems like a perfect fit for the current First Lady.
