The classic Home Run Bat from the Super Smash Bros. franchise will be returning for the newest entry in the series, revamped for the 2014 game for the Wii U and 3DS.

Masahiro Sakurai, the director for Super Smash Bros. 4, announced the news on his Miiverse page, showing off a picture of the new Home Run Bat in use. The Home Run Bat, which when used properly can instantly deal out a KO, has a brand new look to it. Instead of the regular baseball bat look the item had in every other game for the series, the Home Run Bat now is black with gold designs decorating the weapon with a red and gold handle.

It is unclear if the weapon will be even more powerful due to this new design, but characters hit by the weapon will certainly show the impact more expressively than before. In the screenshot that accompanies this announcement Toon Link is seen hitting Donkey Kong with the weapon, and the gorilla's eyes have bugged out after being hit by the Home Run Bat.

Currently, Masahiro Sakurai has remained fairly quiet on the items coming to Super Smash Bros. 4. Poke Balls have been confirmed as returning to the series, but the only two Pokémon summons confirmed for the game are for Palkia and Xerneas. Half a dozen assist trophy characters have been confirmed, with Mother Brain from the Metroid series being the most recent. Other items confirmed for the game include the Beetle, Capsule, Fire Flower, Green Turtle Shell, Hocotate Ship, Ray Gun, Smash Ball, Steel Diver, Wii Fit Soccer Ball, and X Bomb.

So far 22 characters have been confirmed for the game, but of the current roster only The Villager, The Wii Fit Trainer, Capcom's Mega Man, and Rosalina are new additions. Nintendo may be waiting for big events such as E3 to reveal brand new characters for the game, but in the meantime the company is keeping fans up to date with the game through the daily updates found on the game's official website. Super Smash Bros. 4 is expected to be available sometime in 2014, but so far Nintendo has refused to confirm when Wii U and 3DS owners can expect to see the game.
