Amir Khan moved one step closer to landing a date with Floyd Mayweather Jr. after the Briton toppled Marcos Maidana in a fan voting poll made by the undefeated boxing champion himself.

BoxingScene reported on Monday that Khan got 60 percent of the votes in the poll, which was launched by Mayweather through his Twitter account to help him decide in picking his opponent for his next bout on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Maidana, whose stock is at an all-time high after his scintillating upset win over previously-unbeaten Adrien Broner, took a huge lead in the first few days of the poll, creating speculations that the Argentine will be chosen by Mayweather.

The Argentine admitted that he was surprised with the early results, declaring that he will make himself ready for a possible showdown with the reigning pound-for-pound king.

"I was very surprised by the poll campaign. I do want to fight Mayweather. I know that it would be very difficult because he is a great boxer, the best, but he is not invincible. A fight with Mayweather would be the most anticipated of my entire career. If I were to beat Mayweather, I would consider retirement. I would have to think about it, sit down and think about that for a little while," Maidana told BoxingScene on Sunday.

However, Khan, who has been very vocal about his intentions to face Mayweather, appealed to his Twitter followers to vote for him, and his fans did not disappoint the Bolton native as he quickly edged Maidana in the poll.

Earlier reports indicated that fight fans were more interested in seeing Mayweather collide with Maidana after the latter's impressive victory over Broner in their title showdown last month.

On the other hand, analysts are also convinced that Khan, despite his unimpressive record in his last few bouts, also deserves a shot at the undefeated record of the 36-year-old Mayweather.

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, who once trained the Briton, and former champion Ricky Hatton previously said that Khan has the fight speed and style to put Mayweather in trouble if Khan uses those tools to his advantage.
