The Los Angeles Lakers need to make a major roster shakeup in the offseason to get back into title contention. Luckily, one Laker great is willing to do his part to help his struggling former team get back to their winning ways.

Magic Johnson is willing to help the Lakers in recruiting big-name free agents this summer in hopes of turning the team into a championship contender again next season, the LA Times reported on Wednesday.

Johnson said that he's recruited players for the team in the past, citing his role in convincing players like Ron Artest and Lamar Odom to sign with the Lakers.

"I've done that in the past," Johnson said of recruiting free agents for the Lakers. "I told [General Manager] Mitch Kupchak that last week. First they have to make up their mind on who they want, and then they tell me, just like I recruited Ron Artest, I talked to Lamar Odom."

Johnson also added that he previously played the role of mediator between players, who were having issues with their executives, citing the previous tumultuous relationship between Odom and late Lakers owner Jerry Buss.

Odom wanted out of the Lakers at one point in his career, but Johnson pointed out that he was able to convince the versatile forward to stay in Los Angeles, and he believes he can do the same thing for their unhappy players at this point.

"I talked to Dr. Buss when Lamar and Dr. Buss were having that problem for a minute there. I was able to calm everybody down and make sure they understood how valuable Lamar was, and then Dr. Buss signed him back," Johnson said.

The Lakers are expected to be very active in recruiting free agents starting in July since they will have enough cap space to sign a big-name free agent.

Previous reports indicated that the Lakers are expected to make a strong push for Carmelo Anthony, who already announced his intention to test free agency this summer. They could also make a run at LeBron James or Chris Bosh if they decide to test the market as well.

In the event the Lakers fail to secure another superstar to play alongside Bryant, they are expected to resume their pursuit in the summer of 2015 when the likes of the Kevin Love and Rajon Rondo hit free agency.
