Texas Senate to Pass Abortion Bill Despite Fierce Opposition

A controversial bill in Texas is ready to put major restrictions on a woman's right to choose whether she will abort an unwanted pregnancy or not, despite large amounts of opposition from women's rights groups and the Democrat minority in the state's Senate.

The bill would ban all Texas women from getting abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, citing scientific studies that claim a fetus in that stage of development can feel pain. The bill would also place heavy restrictions on clinics that are able to perform abortions, forcing them to qualify as surgical centers, a demand most cannot afford that would almost certainly close 37 of the state's 42 abortion clinics. The bill would also heavily restrict the use of the RU486 pill, a.k.a the "abortion pill."

It has been a rough road for the bill to become law, as the Democratic minority in the second most populous state in the country fought hard to prevent the bill from passing, including the famous filibuster from Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, last month prevented the bill from being passed earlier. However, it looks like for all their effort the bill will become law once Gov. Rick Perry signs the bill, making it official Texas policy.

Since a federal bill was passed in 1973 regulating and effectively legalizing abortion, 12 states have put similarly strict laws into effect that restrict or ban abortions past 20 weeks, according to Reuters. Laws such as the one in Texas have sparked fierce debates, both in the government and regular citizens, over a woman's right to choose and the validity of unborn life.

While this bill may pass, Planned Parenthood and other similar women's rights organizations plan to continue fighting the law, and will challenge the bill in court immediately after it is put into law. It will be interesting to see if the bill could be modified or overturned, or if the law will remain in effect and cause some serious repercussions for those seeking help at perhaps the most vulnerable periods in their lives.
