Smoking can be a hard habit to break, and "Hello" hitmaker Adele knows it. The 27-year old singer recently shared that she is kicking the habit for the sake of her young son.

It was reported by Fox News that the British songstress has kicked the habit of smoking because she fears that she will die prematurely. A report with British publication The Mirror also said that the "Rolling in the Deep" songstress would smoke up to 25 packs of cigarettes a day. She had to cancel her shows in 2011 after losing her voice.

The singer told the British newspaper that she had to quit the habit, as she might have died from a smoking-related illness like lung cancer. She added that she would have given it to herself and that was something that she would not be proud of.

Many who try to nix the habit find it hard to quit. Like all addictions, smoking poses many dangers to one's health. A report with NLM says that there is really no skirting around the issue that smoking is bad for one's health. Smoking is proven to harm every organ of the human body.

Cigarette smoking reportedly causes 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. The destructive habit is also responsible for many other cancers and health problems, including lung disease, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke and cataracts. Here are 5 ways to nix the habit yourself:

1. Set a quit date

In order to nix the habit, set a realistic quit date. Help Guide says that those who want to quit smoking should opt to choose a date within the next two weeks, so that they have enough time to prepare without losing the will to quit. Smokers who find themselves smoking at work, are advised to quit on the weekend, as it will give them a few days to get over the change.

2. Identify Smoking Triggers

In order to quit smoking effectively, smokers should learn what it is that gets them triggered to smoke in the first place. They should identify any unpleasant feelings or thoughts that would make them want to smoke, such as being stressed out at work or having to deal with a relationship or family problem. It is also important to remember that there are also healthier alternatives to deal with stress, such as breathing exercises and meditating.

3. Remove all cigarettes and tobacco products from your home and place of work

The old adage, "Out of sight, out of mind" applies here. In order to effectively nix the habit, be sure to throw away all cigarettes, even the emergency packs. It is also advised to get rid of cigarette lighters, ashtrays, and matches. Be sure to wash clothes and make sure to have all traces of cigarette smoke removed.

4. Ask the doctor for help in quitting

Consult a doctor to prescribe medication to help with withdrawal symptoms. Alternatively, there are also many products that can be purchased over the counter such as nicotine patches, nicotine lozenges and nicotine gum.

5. Be aware of all the challenges that this will pose

Quitting smoking cold turkey will pose a lot of challenges along the way. There will be times that withdrawal can be really painful or cause relationship and work problems. The first three months can be the hardest, so it is important to be prepared for cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
