It's official. The popular Wii Fit franchise will be coming to the Wii U on Jan. 10, Nintendo announced to Gamespot.

The game requires the Wii Balance Board or a newer model. The boards that were sold on the original Wii Fit game will work on the Wii U. In addition, the game will also require the new Fit Meter accessory. You can buy a bundle that includes the game, a Balance Board, and the Fit Meter all for $90. A second bundle is also available that includes the game and Fit Meter without the Balance Board that will also be available for $50. Nintendo will also sell Fit Meters separately for $20. Finally, back in November, Nintendo offered Wii U owners a one-month free-trial of the game when it was released, which players can still redeem until Jan. 31. This means that players who already have the Balance Board and Fit Meter can play the game for free when it comes out and then purchase the game after.

Scott Moffitt, a Nintendo of America marketing executive, touted the game's ability to bring families together ahead of its launch.

"Wii Fit U is a great option for busy moms and families who want to stay active in the comfort of their own homes, which is perfect during the cold winter months."

While many Nintendo fans may not think of the Wii Fit series as one of the most popular franchises for the company, the previous two games in the series have quietly managed to sell tens of millions of copies. The original Wii Fit sold over 22 million copies, and the 2009 game Wii Fit Plus sold over 20 million copies as well. While it is doubtful that Wii Fit U will be able to match these figures due to the low sales of the Wii U, the game could be a sleeper hit for the struggling console. After all, if previous games of the series could sell 20 million units each while being bundle with extra accessories, then Wii Fit U has the potential to also be a monster success for Nintendo.
