Would you want a smartphone to go with your Pepsi soda?

No, those sites were not joking around with you when they announced that Pepsi Co is making their own smartphone --- the company itself confirmed that to Tech Radar, and specs are already out.

A spokesperson for Pepsi Co said, "We are pleased to share that Pepsi is working with a licensing partner to bring a line of mobile phones and accessories to market in China in the next few months."

Don't get too excited: The key word to that statement is China --- as in the smartphone will only be available in China. The spokesperson added, "Available in China only, this effort is similar to recent globally licensed Pepsi products which include apparel and accessories"

"Pepsi has always moved at the speed of culture, and today technology is a key cultural pillar at the heart of consumer interaction. Pepsi has no plans to get into the mobile phone manufacturing business, but we are committed to engaging with consumers in innovative ways to grow our brand. We'll share more news as it becomes available."

Pepsi hasn't released details about their new smartphones yet, but according to Chinese blogs via Engaget, it's going to be called the Pepsi P1, and will look quite unremarkable, especially with this year's smartphone competition.

The phone is said to be a mid-range Android phablet with a 5.5-inch screen, 1080 display, 1.7 Ghz CPU and 16GB worth of storage. It is also said t have a 13MP main camera with a 5MP front shutter for selfies. As for its battery, it is said to sport a 3,000 mAh one for long battery life. For its OS, it is said to come with the Android 5.1 Lollipop, as mentioned by GSM Arena.

Pepsi has confirmed that it will also release accessories, which means that the phone will be sporting some Pepsi bling. It's not too expensive for its $200 price tag, but don't expect to find it in stores in the US or Europe.

Reuters also noted that even though having a Pepsi-brand smartphone is a bit on the bizarre side, this is not the first time the company went to that direction, adding that the company already has several licenses across different categories, including a Danish Luxury stereo, and TV maker Bang & Olufsen. It also has a range of Italian shoes from Del Toro for a range of products for its soccer campaign.

What is your opinion on their next endeavor being a smartphone, is this a smart or is it a bad move for the company?
