Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition can once again lay claim to being on the cutting edge of Android. The new Android 4.4.2 KitKat firmware is now available for download.

The upgrade, firmware version I9505GUEUCML4, began hitting the airwaves Dec. 15, meaning most Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play editions should have received a download notification by now. As usual, you'll want to have the device charged and tethered to a Wi-Fi connection to snag the 57.5MB upgrade.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition already runs Android 4.4 KitKat, so there won't be too many surprises lurking in the upgrade. Instead, Android 4.4.2 mostly contains bug and security fixes, including one for an SMS exploit in KitKat.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition runs the stock version of the Android operating system (in other words, exactly as Google made it), allowing it to receive upgrades straight from Google without having to go through development cycles in Samsung and various carriers. It can be bought at the Google Play store for $649.

There's no official word on when other variants of the Samsung Galaxy S4, will receive their first taste of Android 4.4 KitKat. Galaxy S4s worldwide currently run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but rumors in the technosphere indicate that Samsung might roll out Android 4.4 KitKat for the flagship device sometime during the first three months of 2014.
