Barcelona Beat Sevilla to Win UEFA Super Cup

FC Barcelona won their first major trophy of the 2015-2016 season with a crazy, 5-4 extra time win against Sevilla. Pedro proved to be the difference as he scored the winner five minutes before the final whistle.

In a report by GOAL, Europa League Champions Sevilla came into the match as underdogs. They had a great start when Ever Banega scored a fantastic 25-yard free-kick in the third minute.

Four-time FIFA Ballon d'Or winner, Lionel Messi got back in the seventh minute with his own superb free-kick. Banega then fouled Andres Iniesta in the 15th minute, 30 yards aways from goal. Messi did not waste the opportunity as he scored his second goal with another brilliant free-kick.

Rafinha added a third goal in the final minutes of the first half, receiving a pass from Luis Suarez. Sergio Busquets then picked off a poor pass by Sevilla, assisting Suarez the fourth goal in the 52nd minute.

Suarez was ruled offside in an earlier play according to BleacherReport. The replays showed that the Uruguay international was behind the ball when Benjamin Mathieu made the cross.

Even with a three goal deficit, Sevilla played aggressively against the Catalans. Jose Antonio Reyes scored an impressive volley 12 minutes into the second half.

Mathieu then took down Sevilla winger, Vitolo inside the penalty area in the 72nd minute. Kevin Gameiro wasted no time in converting the penalty to decrease the lead to one goal.

On loan striker Ciro Immobile moved past Marc Bartra in the 81st minute to assist Yevhen Konoplyanka with the equaliser. Messi nearly had a hat trick in the final minutes, missing wide from a free-kick to force extra time.

Pedro came on for Barcelona at extra time to provide energy after 90 minutes of competitive football. In a report by Independent, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique was angry at the officials after picking up a bloody nose after a forearm from Immobile.

No goals were score in the first half of extra time. Barcelona dominated the possession but no scoring chance was created by both squads.

In the final five minutes of extra time, Messi won a free-kick. His shot was saved by Beto but Pedro reacted quickly to slot home the winner.

Sevilla had two more chances to force a penalty shootout. Coke's header flew wide of the post and Adil Rami missed using his knee in the dying seconds of the match.

The men from Catalonia celebrated with their travelling fans at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi, Georgia. According to a report by The Guardian, Pedro possibly played his last game with Barcelona. English-side Manchester United has made a €30 million bid for the player.
