James Cameron's "Avatar" became the highest-grossing film in history when it was released in the blockbuster office in 2009. The movie grossed nearly 2.8 billion and went on to win three Academy Awards. With the three subsequent sequels already in development, fans of the original flick might be wondering what Cameron is conjuring for the project.

Compiled below are the latest rumors and news reports about "Avatar 2."

Film to Take Place Underwater

As per Movie Pilot, "Avatar 2" is set to take place under the ocean, specifically in Pandora's underwater ecosystem. This detail was revealed by legendary American music composer James Horner, who Cameron also worked with on "Titanic."

"A lot of it will take place underwater, which is a completely different environment and I have seen some of the stuff, and it's stunning. All I can say is, you have never seen that before," Horner spilled when he was interviewed by Hey U Guys before he died in a plane crash last June 22.

Production Delay

Earlier this year, it was reported that "Avatar 2" will be shown in theaters in Christmas 2017, a year later than what was originally planned. The two succeeding films will be released in 2018 and 2019, IGN wrote.

Cameron also stated that it's highly important that each movie connects to the next one so that the viewers wouldn't be left hanging when the sequels come to an end, Fox News Latino reported.

High-Tech Scenes

According to Movie News Guide, the reason why the sequels are delayed is because Cameron is working on a new technology that will enable him to shoot motion-capture scenes underwater. The director "intends to increase the frame rate for the second sequel," adding that it will be "far advanced than 24 frames per second, which is the current standard in the film industry."

This filming style will capture the power and emotion of "Avatar 2," Movie News Guide noted. Jim Gianopulos, Chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment, said that Cameron is ambitiously developing the sequels, adding that the filmmaker "has his own pace," the news outlet added.

Cameron Managing Four Scripts

Back in April, it was revealed by Horner that Cameron is organizing four screenplays of the follow-up projects for "Avatar."

"Right now Jim has... four sequels script-wise, and he's trying to make it into three," Horner said in his interview with HeyUGuys, IGN quoted. "And that is where his effort is going right now, to keep it to three sequels. Because he's got so much going on...trying to keep it from expanding into a fifth movie."

Returning Cast Members

In January 2014, it was announced that Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington will be back in the "Avatar" sequels to reprise their respective roles as Na'vi huntress Neytiri and Marine Jake Sully, Fox News Latino wrote. Producer Jon Landau is working with Cameron in the sequels.
