Harry Potter fans are in for some surprise after author J.K. Rowling announced that the theatre version of her masterpiece will be shown in London come summer 2016.

Entitled "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," the play will explore on the "untold" stories of the main character like the lives of his mother and father, Lily and James Potter.

E! Online said that with the announcement, Rowling also clarified that the play will not have a prequel. She also addressed questions on why she she decided on pushing through with a play instead of writing another novel.

"I am confident that when audiences see the play they will agree it was the only proper medium for the story #CursedChild," she said on her Twitter account.

This announcement is also timely with the 18th year anniversary when the first book (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) was published in the United Kingdom.

According to Mirror, the play was first announced last December 2013 after much prodding from theatre personalities to have Harry Potter's story presented on theatre.

"It will tell a new story. I don't want to say too much more, because I don't want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans," the author added, noting that she is very much excited to work on the project.

There has already been an informal casting on the play, but that's about the only detail that the audience are entitled of knowing since the people behind it want to keep almost everything a surprise. Mirror said it will be shown at the Palace Theatre, the same place where the hit musical Les Miserables was showcased for 19 years.

A statement on the author's website also revealed that tickets for the play will be available in autumn.

"Produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender's Playground Entertainment and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, tickets for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will go on public sale this autumn, details of which will be announced summer 2015 and will be shared on the official website, in late July," the statement read.

Meanwhile, Business Insider noted that this is a much awaited step especially after the Harry Potter series ended and with Rowling only releasing information and stories of the books in her Twitter account and on the Pottermore website.

The website which focused on the "unknown parts" of the series also explored the lives of other characters in the books like Professor McGonagall and Dolores Umbridge.

CNN said this is a very much welcome development especially to fans wanting to see more of the Harry Potter series which will also have a spinoff movie.

It was earlier confirmed by Warner Bros. Pictures that a trilogy, entitled "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," starring Eddie Redmayne will be "based on a book central to the 'Harry Potter' saga."
