While Marvel is doing the first accompanying comic book for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," DC is taking Star Trek and pairing it with the Green Lantern in an all new crossover comic series.

According to Screen Rant, there were rumors of Chris Pine donning the Green Lantern suit in a remake film, but there hasn't been a lot of fanfare in that regard. However, with the announcement of the star reprising his role in "Star Trek" for the new crossover, things just may look up.

The website noted that DC Comics and IDW Publishing will be launching a crossover Green Lantern / Star Trek series this July, with the emerald ring-slingers and the Enterprise joining forces in the "Spectrum War."

The website said that the partnership will take classic characters from the science fiction franchise and put them in the realm of space superheroes, where the Green Lantern is. The story is said to be written by Mike Johnson (who also had experience with "Star Trek" along with DC), with art from Angel Hernandez.

In a statement reported by IGN, IDW president Greg Goldstein said about the project, "We've looked forward to bringing these two iconic universes together for a long time. Star Trek and Green Lantern both share so many of the same science-fiction adventure themes and ideals, that a galaxy-spanning crossover like this is simply... logical."

The same website also noted the official synopsis of the crossover story, which reads,

"Set in Star Trek's 23rd Century, the balance of the universe will be tested when the Green Lantern Corps' Power Rings come into the possession of certain Star Trek characters while a dark and powerful evil looms around every corner. Only the combined power of the Green Lantern Corp and the Federation stand any chance of stopping those who worship evil's might."

This isn't the first time that "Star Trek" crossed over with DC, as the sci-fi hit already did so before with a "Legion of Superheroes" team-up in 2011. As Blastr noted, while these types of crossovers are more likely to be gimmicks than part of the developed stories, it's still cool to think of the Federation's ship and the galaxy's police force running into each other in space.

The first covers can be seen here, check them out.
