The last time Justin Bieber released an album was in 2012, so it should be expected that the singer's fans are excited about what his upcoming record has to offer. Luckily for his followers, Bieber recently teased about what his new music is focusing on - and it's no other than his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez.

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, the 21-year-old crooner admitted "a lot of my inspiration comes from [Gomez]," Hollywood Life wrote.

"It was a long relationship that created heartbreak and created happiness and a lot of different emotions that I wanted to write about. There's a lot of that on this album," Bieber added, during an episode of "On Air" on Thursday.

The on-again/off-again former couple started dating in 2010, PEOPLE reported. The highly publicized relationship spurred 22-year-old Gomez to sing about Bieber in her 2014 track "The Heart Wants What It Wants," which is a spot-on reference to their whirlwind romance.

Since then, the pair has both moved on from their relationship through dating other people. The former Disney star is currently being linked to her "I Want You to Know" collaborator DJ Zedd while Bieber has been rumored to date models Barbara Palvin and Hailey Baldwin, although the "Baby" singer insists that he is enjoying being "single" right now," PEOPLE noted.

Speaking about his upcoming album, Bieber told Seacrest that he's planning to spill his innermost emotions in his new music.

"There is a lot of stuff that I've been going through over the last few years," he explained, as quoted by Hollywood Life. "I just really want to bleed it on this record. I want people to know that I'm not playing around. I'm not doing a record that is cookie cutter or doing something that I think people want to hear... I've been pretty silent about what I've been going through and just growing up in this life is hard, so I want to translate that."

Bieber also revealed in the interview that he's not rushing to release his album and that he's "not playing around," adding that he wants to create "the best piece of art," Hollywood Life wrote. The "Never Say Never" singer also complimented his fellow musician Kanye West, who he collaborates with on the record.

"I have been in the studio with [Kanye West] for the past month or so. I think that he just pushes you. He definitely wants it to be my way and my direction and he doesn't want to steal what I want, but he pushes it. That's why artists love to go to him because he pulls something out of you that other people don't," the Canadian crooner said, as reported by the news outlet.
