It seems like Facebook is trying every possible means to get into every inch of your smartphone.

Last week, reports citing the company's alleged new product hit the web, supported by a leaked screenshot that mentions of a certain "Phone" app.

The news follows confirmed reports on Messenger's upcoming Payments feature, set to allow financial transactions between friends. The system requires users to provide VISA or MasterCard information.

Facebook addressed security features, "We use secure systems that encrypt the connection between you and Facebook as well as your card information when you ask us to store it for you. We use layers of software and hardware protection that meet the highest industry standards."

According to Android Police, the [FB-ONLY] tag indicated in the Phone app appears to suggest that "somebody flipped the wrong switch."

At this point, it isn't uncommon to notice new features or UI changes before they make official launches, but what makes the Phone app intriguing is that it may have been intended for the company's internal use.

In a more recent report, SlashGear said Facebook has confirmed the existence of the app, though no other details have been revealed. However, it is known to be under testing.

A Facebook spokesperson told VentureBeat, "We are always testing things and have nothing to announce at this time."

When the app is attempted for installation, a "no page found" error comes as a prompt.

The app is reportedly packing usual features such as caller ID, call-blocking and instant calling, Techie News cited.

As for the blocking feature, the PCMag noted that it's said to "block calls from commonly blocked numbers." Confusing as this may sound, the outlet suggested that the app may be blocking calls from numbers already blocked on one's device, or calls from people blocked in one's Facebook account.

The current reports may remind followers of a literal Facebook phone that sprung rumors in the past. Some would remember that word over a Facebook handset started around 2010, as TechCrunch reminded earlier.

The speculations rose once more in 2012, when the social network giant and Taiwanese manufacturer HTC are said to be working on a customized Android smartphone.

Later, the Menlo Park company denied such claims. Speaking to Mashable, Facebook confirmed, "Facebook is not building a phone. Our approach has always been to make phones and apps more social."

Nevertheless, creative minds have crafted stunning concept renders, which you can check out here, here and here.

Are you looking forward to try Facebook's Phone app? Would you rather download from other third-party developers or stick to your phone's default settings?
