The trailer for Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, "Lost River", has piqued the curiosity of fans even if it did not get the thumbs up from critics during last year's Cannes Film Festival.

According to Latina Entertainment, the mysterious film stars Christina Hendricks as a single mother who got herself involved in a surreal and dark underworld. Her teenage son, portrayed by Iain De Caestecker, "falls for a girl and discovers a town submerged after the damming of a river," Latina Entertainment reported.

Gosling's longtime partner, Eva Mendes, stars in the movie as a woman named Cat. Matt Smith, Ben Mendelsohn, and Reda Kateb, are also among the cast, the news outlet noted.

According to a report from MTV, "Lost River" is slated to come out in theaters on April 10 and will be available the same day on digital HD copies. It already premiered at 2014's Cannes Film Festival and was previously titled "How to Catch a Monster." Latina Entertainment, however, reported that the film received various negative reviews from critics when it was shown in the festival.

Mendes previously talked about her experience working with Gosling, who she has a baby girl with named Esmeralda. In an interview with E! News, she stated that the actor is "the best" and that he runs "a perfect ship" behind the camera. In the film's trailer, Mendes was featured as a dancer who mysteriously ends up lying on the floor with bruises on her face.

"He created the most beautiful, collaborative, creative atmosphere on set," Mendes said. "I know I'm biased."

Gosling also stated that the digital release of "Lost River" benefits people who don't have access to specialty theaters.

"[The] theatrical and digital release plan provides the best of both worlds," Gosling said, as quoted by another report from E! Online. "It allows those who are interested in seeing my film in a theater to do so without excluding the majority of people who don't have access to a specialty cinema."

What's next for Gosling?

According to a Star Magazine report cited by the Daily Mail, Gosling and Mendes, along with their daughter, have been invited over for lunch by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at the couple's Los Feliz mansion at Los Angeles, California.

Pitt and Gosling will soon be shooting their upcoming film "The Big Short" along with Christian Bale. The film will be directed by Adam McKay, according to Variety.
